Winter Talk: Archeology on the Medway

Download as iCal file

Thursday 24 January 2013, 19:30 - 21:00

Paul Newman has lined up a series of interesting talks over the winter.  The first in this series is a presentation by a local archeologist with a particular interest in the ancient history of the Medway.

This promises to be a very informative and entertaining evening.  Just the thing for a January evening when there is no paddling.  Come and support your club and find out more about where we paddle.

Simon Elliot is a local historian studying for a PhD in Archeology at the University of Kent.  He has two Masters degress, in War Studies from KCL and in Archeology from UCL.  For his PhD, Simon is conducting detailed analysis of the Medway Valley during the Roman occupation, focussing on the importance of the River Medway as a vital transport route for the intensive local ragstone quarrying which allowed the urbanisation, and later fortification, of Southern Britain. His research has uncovered a rich landscape of quarries, villas, weirs and locks.  He lives with his family in East Farleigh.

Cost £2.00 in advance (to cover travel and refreshments) £3.00 on the night.  Bookings to Paul Newman  [email protected] or see him at the club  (money in hand).

First come first served - open to all (including non-members).

See you there!
