Nene - Beginner's Whitewater Trip

Download as iCal file

Sunday 21 May 2017, 10:30 - 21:00

Bill and I will be running a trip to the white water course at Nene, next Sunday 21st May. This course offers a great introduction to moving water for those of you who have gained experience of paddling on flat water.

The course is open from 2.30pm until 6.00pm and costs £12 for adults and £9 for children. We would aim to leave the club at around 10.30am and return around 9.00pm. Richard has kindly offered to transport kayaks to the course and Bill and I are happy to take some paddlers in our van (both subject to a contribution to fuel.)

To paddle independently at Nene, you are required to be of 3 star standard. If you are not at this level, Bill and I are happy to sign you on as part of a coached group. It is easy to access the course at any point, so paddlers new to moving water can get on towards the end of the course, where it is easier, and build up to running the whole course (or stay on the easier section if that is what you feel happiest with.)

In order to paddle on the course, you will need to either:

  • apply for a Nene Whitewater Card if you are 3 star standard
  • be signed on as part of a group if not.

Either way you need to fill in a Medical Consent form and a risk form, downloadable here: FORMS

We know that this is short notice, but we didn't want to offer the trip until we were sure that we could offer transport. You will need to email me: [email protected] or sign up on the Maidstone Canoe Club Paddlers Facebook page. Please ask if you have any questions or if you want to know whether this trip is suitable for you. You don't have to have been on moving water before, but you do need to have worn a spraydeck before and be confident of pulling your deck and swimming down the course if you capsize. I would point out though, that you can stand up in most of the course.

Disclaimer: all our trips are run by club members like you, and unless specifically described otherwise are peer paddles.  If you think that you would benefit from the support of a formal river leader or coach, please contact the trip organiser in advance - we can usually arrange something!  Otherwise you should be confident that your own ability matches the trip as planned.  If your trip is being led by someone - a more experienced paddler, river leader or a coach - it is your responsibility to mention any medical or other issues which may arise during the trip.
