Open Day 2021

Despite changeable weather and lockdown restriction this year’s open day was a huge success. A big thank you to all the club members who put in so much effort to make this so. Not only those who were there on the day working so hard and effectively but those who help with the organisation. Well done all. Some photos of the day are posted on the photo page but please look under 2020.

Independent Paddling at the Club - Guidance

Just a clarification about this year's rule-change from the Committee on using Club equipment, boatshed keys, etc.:

  • anyone at Explore Award (old 2*) standard or above can use Club equipment whenever they want and are eligible for boatshed keys.  Mail Geoff if you'd like a key for the boatshed.  If you'd like to take a Club boat away from the Medway, please mail the bosun first to check that's OK.
  • anyone with their own boat - regardless of paddling ability - can go out whenever they want, and are eligible for boat shed keys if they have a boat stored at the club.
  • anyone below Explore Award (old 2*) standard can only go out on an organised Club paddle. Club paddles should be led by someone with the Paddlesport Activity Assistant (PAAs) (or equivalent experience at committee discretion)

(Note that being at "Explore Award standard" doesn't mean you have to have the actual certificate - equivalent experience / ability is certainly good enough)

Hope that's clear - please mail someone on the committee in case of questions!

Open Day Full!

We've been overwhelmed with the support for our Open Day this weekend - thanks to everyone who has booked a space!  We're slightly sad to announce that all spaces are now full - we simply can't fit anyone else in :-(

If you haven't pre-booked a slot, please don't turn up "on the off-chance" - we really don't have enough boats for any extras!  But you can still book one of our beginner courses, or maybe we'll see you at our next Open Day!

Happy paddling!

Calling Experienced Paddlers

Have you been paddling for a while?  Pretty confident in your boat?  Got a boatshed key (or would like to)?

Then you - yes, actually you! - are exactly the people we're looking for!  With regular Sunday & Wednesday paddles not happening - Covid, obvs - we've got new members who just need a little bit of confidence & support to get out on the water.  And they'd love for you to come with them!

Jacob and Lee are running short familiarisation sessions to help with this, after which you'll be one of the Club's Paddlesport Activity Assistants.  No special hat or shiny badge, but you will have the warm fuzzy feeling inside that you get from helping less-experienced paddlers enjoy the river - just like someone once did for you.

Please drop Lee or Jacob an email to help out.

Fantastic time with Hastings & District CC

A huge thanks to Mark and all at HDCC who made us so welcome at their lovely Clubhouse by the sea yesterday - a great paddle and a lovely barbecue afterwards!

Wildlife Enthusiasts Wanted

Hi everyone it's James Copeland.  I have recently been made one of the regional coordinators for Kent for Seawatch Foundation, a charity that specialises in the conservation and protection of Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises. This is where you guys come in. Not much is known about them off the kent coast - only when they become stranded - and this is something I want to change.
From 24th July - 1st August, Seawatch Foundation is running a national whale and dolphin week in which people like you and me go out recording and looking for whales, dolphins and porpoises on our local coastline. I'm looking for 10-15 people to help me with some surveying during the week, each survey will last about two hours as staring at the sea can be very tiring.
I'm hoping to have people surveying at 5 different locations (not necessarily every day) these are:
Isle of grain, Margate, Ramsgate, Dover and Dungeness  (please let me know preference)
Training is provided and I have some I.D kits and binoculars for people to borrow.
If anyone is interested in helping do some surveying or just want to come along to watch please message me on :07943566931 or [email protected]
(Closing date for volunteers is 16th July)

Sea Kayaking with Hastings CC

If you're planning on coming to the joint trip with Hastings & District canoe club next weekend (26th June) next weekend, can you please drop me a line?  We need to firm up the numbers.  (If you haven't booked you're welcome to come as long as you can bring your own boat!)

Open Day - Booking

Our fabulous, FREE Open Day is only a few weeks away!  On 4th July, we'd love to welcome you on to the River Medway in one of our kayaks or canoes for a splash about under the watchful eye of one of our paddlers.  This year we've introduced a booking system - you'll need to book online here for one of our slots.

See you on the water!
