Otherness - 45 Days on the Isle of Beauty

In the summer of 2012, Dave Wise spent six weeks camped in the Medway Estuary, on Darnet Island.  Maybe you saw him as he paddled past, exploring the inner and outer estuary and foraging for food.  Maybe you met him on one of the guided Medway Canoe Trails he ran last year.

He's crafted a book and made a film about this most unusual canoe expedition, right in our back yard, illustrated with hand-drawn maps and images taken with a pinhole camera Dave made from driftwood.  It looks like an extraordinary tale.

See Dave's website here for more information, to order the book and to see the film.  It's well worth a look.

Spring Newsletter!

The snow is thawing, the birds are singing, and the latest newsletter is out!  Get it here if you haven't already, and sign up on the left of this page to get it delivered to your Inbox next time!

Rowing Races

There will be a series of rowing races on Sunday 3rd March between King's School boathouse up to Maidstone, all morning. We will therefore paddle away from the club, most likely Yalding. Meet at the club normal time and we will get as many boats up to Yalding as possible.

Club Workshops

The BCU are running a number of workshops looking at the running and operations of Canoe Clubs.  The topics covered will include event & trip safety management, marketing strategies, and a "Time to Listen" course (required for many coaches and Welfare Officers).  Our local one is on 23rd February at Bewl Water, and it should have some interesting stuff - see attached and contact Jack Ford, [email protected] for full details.

Spring Newsletter!

Although Spring may seem a distant dream, the closing date for the Spring Newsletter is fast approaching!  Any articles, thoughts, gear reviews, etc. gratefully recieved before February 10th

I'd particularly like any trip reports for any trips you've been on since November - just a couple of paragraphs and a photo would be fine!

Hydropower on the River Thames

Please see attachment, this may be of general interest, seems like a good idea to harness power that is otherwise unused. The scemes proposed could generate something like 2 MWatts in total.
